Ticks – this word certainly spreads fear and terror, especially in the summer months. After all, these arachnids can transmit dangerous diseases – including the so-called Lyme disease and the even more dangerous early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE).
DO NOT TAKE TICK BITES LIGHTLY
Basically, it can be said that there is a kind of north-south divide in Germany: In northern Germany, the probability of a tick transmitting the dreaded early summer meningoencephalitis is much lower than in Bavaria, for example. It is also rather unlikely, for example in Hamburg, that a tick bite (not tick bite) will lead to the dangerous form of meningitis. In the south of the republic the situation is different – here it is often necessary to use tick protection.
The north-south gradient, which applies to TBE, can certainly be transferred to Lyme disease.
TICK PROTECTION FROM ASS PEST CONTROL, ESPECIALLY IN RISK AREAS
Even though a vaccine against borreliosis was developed in the USA, a vaccination to protect against ticks is unfortunately still not possible in Germany. The reason: the borreliosis vaccination is simply effective only against certain Borrelia species – it has no effect against the species which are widespread in Europe. The situation is different with TBE; here a vaccine is a reliable protection against this dangerous disease.
If you have been out in the wild, search carefully for ticks at home. The little animals love it warm and often look for spots on the neck, in the crook of the arm or the back of the knee for their bites. The groin area is also a preferred place for sucking blood.
If you discover a tick on you, stay calm and carefully lift or turn the animal with a tick card or tongs. Look very carefully and examine the animal: if the stinging tool has remained on the animal, everything is fine. If not, it is advisable to consult a doctor who will remove the sting.
HOW TO REMOVE TICKS FROM PETS TOO
You should also regularly check your pets for tick infestation after walks in nature or the garden – after all, your little darlings live with you in the same household. The best way to remove ticks from dogs and cats is with a tick hook. The sooner a tick is removed, the lower the risk of it transmitting pathogens. This usually happens in the last stage of sucking, when the animal is already well-fed and soon falls off.
