In the past few days, June has brought us midsummery temperatures – and reminded us that the holiday season is just around the corner. For many people, that’s when it means pack their bags and head off to a holiday paradise. But before you set off for your holiday accommodation, you should take a look at our latest blog post – otherwise you might bring along some unwanted guests from your long-awaited holiday.
WHAT ARE BEDBUGS?
Bedbugs are small brown insects with a flat, oval body. Adult specimens reach a size of 3.5 to 5.5 mm – when fully sucked, a bedbug can even measure up to 9 mm. Therefore, they are also easily visible to the naked eye. As the animals are very agile, you can “catch” them almost everywhere – not only in hotels or airplanes, but also when you buy used suitcases or furniture.
WHY DO BEDBUGS OFTEN APPEAR IN HOTELS AND PENSIONS?
The rooms of hotels and guesthouses accommodate countless different guests every year. A single infected suitcase is enough to bring in bed bugs – and these then migrate into the homes of subsequent guests via luggage. To avoid this, you should unpack your luggage in the bathtub after your journey home. The light-colored surface makes it easy to spot the bugs – and you prevent them from getting on or into your furniture.
WHICH LOCATIONS USE BEDBUGS AS HIDING PLACES?
Bedbugs like to retreat to dark, quiet places. In addition to cracks in walls, wall and floor cracks and the backs of pictures, any furniture, sockets, light switches and fuse boxes can be used as hiding places. A misconception based on the name of the animals is that bedbugs are only found in the vicinity of beds. Bedbugs have an enormous radius of action and can usually be found in the entire apartment after a short infestation period. Bedbugs tend to avoid pillows, blankets, clothes or stuffed animals.
HOW CAN I TELL IF I HAVE BEEN BITTEN BY A BEDBUG?
Bedbugs are nocturnal parasites that “bite” people while they sleep. Once they reach the skin, they often bite in several places until they hit a blood vessel. This results in “bite marks”, which often run in a straight line and are called “bug lanes”. A bite can manifest itself in different ways: The reactions range from minor skin irritation to severe itching and extreme wheals – similar to mosquito bites or a flea bite.
ARE BEDBUGS A HEALTH HAZARD?
Bedbugs are more than just a nuisance. Through their bites they are able to transmit a number of diseases, e.g. the pathogen that causes Chagas disease. This is a parasite that invades and damages the muscle cells of the body. The heart muscle can also be affected. The great danger lies in the fact that the infection remains undetected for years; the parasite can therefore spread rapidly before the disease is detected and treated. Contrary to common belief, bedbugs are not just an unpleasant nuisance, but a serious health problem.
